I was there, when Youtube, a hobby video platform, was first introduced. And I was extremely lucky and fortunate, to be one of the first to see its potential as a learning tool, becoming one of the very first major teachers on that platform. For 10 years, I was the undisputed nr 1 online saxophone teacher in the world. Anybody who goes on Youtube even today and types in: How to play the saxophone? My now 13 year old videos are still in the top 10 results. And many of them have garnered over a million views. I was one of the first amateur teachers in history (I never even went to music school) who ended up teaching millions how to play an instrument.
But Youtube, like other major tech-companies, became an institution. After a while, it no longer showed people the best, most watched, most liked videos. It started to show people the videos it could sell the most adds for. And those videos that, creators were willing to pay to promote themselves. Many traditional music teachers lost their beginner markets. But the overall number of people playing instruments exploded, and the level of many young, youtube-self-thought musicians exploded also. The entire music teaching business changed dramatically because of Youtube. And a similar shift is happening as we speak. But this time, its all fields of education at once!
